How does unsubscribing work?

Understand how unsubscribing works on Smartlead. Discover how to manage unsubscribed leads and override the global unsubscribe setting.

We have 2 functionalities with unsubscribing.

When a lead is part of a sequence and they receive an email with an unsubscribing link, when the lead clicks on that, lead is has a mark added to their account saying “unsubscribed”, so if you upload another lead list in an another campaign, that particular lead will be skilled, so it is a “global” unsubscribe, you can overwrite this by selecting the settings button when you upload a leads list and manually allowing for previously unsubscribed leads

When you, as a user, manually unsubscribe a lead from a sequence, perhaps your sales rep jumped on a call or they contacted them via Social Media channels and you don’t want to keep pushing emails to the lead, - in that case the unsubscribe is localised just to that campaign, so if you upload that lead in another campaign, they will be added

Now that we've discussed this, here's 2 ways you can add the unsubscribe link/text to your copy:

In the Settings section of the campaign (top right, when you click on edit campaign), once you scroll down there's an option to "Add unsubscribe message in all emails", type in the text you want here, this text will be added to the "bottom" of each email.

You can follow step one, but alternatively, use this pattern %unsubscribe-text% whenever you want to place your unsubscribe text. This approach makes the process more natural and makes your email look less "cold emaily"



Next: Click on settings, and add the unsubscribe text you want to use

Note: The unsubscribe link won't be visible in the test emails to prevent a premature/false unsubscribe.

If the unsubscribe link is not there in the email campaigns you sent please make sure to check inside the campaign settings If the Optimise Email Delivery is turned on that means the emails will not add any HTML content. You need to turn off that settings to use the unsubscribe link. You can't change the settings once the campaign has started.
