This error appears when you try to connect a Gmail account to Smartlead via SMTP/IMAP and your Google account has 2-Step Verification (2FA) enabled. Google blocks third-party apps from using your regular password in this case - you need to generate a dedicated App Password instead.
Step 1 - Make Sure 2-Step Verification Is Enabled
App Passwords can only be created if 2FA is active on your account.
Go to your Google Account Security Settings
Under "How you sign in to Google", click 2-Step Verification
Follow the on-screen steps to enable it if it isn't already
Step 2 - Create an App Password
Go directly to: https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords (You may be asked to sign in again)
In the App Name field, enter a recognisable name — e.g. Smartlead
Click Create
Google will display a 16-character password — copy it immediately as it won't be shown again
Step 3 - Connect Your Account in Smartlead
Go to Email Accounts in Smartlead
Select the Gmail account showing the error
In the password field, paste the App Password you just generated (not your regular Gmail password)
Save and reconnect
Important Notes
If you change your Google account password, your App Password will be automatically revoked — you'll need to generate a new one and reconnect in Smartlead
If you can't find the App Passwords option in your Google account, it may be because your account is managed by a Google Workspace admin — in that case, contact your admin to enable this feature
The App Password is a one-time display — if you lose it, simply generate a new one
